ECA Advocacy Update: April 12, 2024
1. FTC anti-scammer rule is live π |
- Why it matters: Business events industry stakeholders can now report all impersonation fraud attempts to the FTC here. This includes the hotel reservation scams and email list sale scams that plague our industry.
|
What comes next: FTC staff will use these reports to collect evidence so that they can directly file court cases aimed at forcing scammers to return the money they made from impersonation scams that:
|
- Use business logos when communicating with consumers by mail or online.
- Spoof business emails and web addresses, including using lookalike email addresses or websites that rely on misspellings of a companyβs name.
- Falsely imply business affiliation by using terms that are known to be affiliated with a business.

2. Momentum building on ECA priorities |
This week, Congress took action on 2 of ECA's top federal policy priorities:
|
- Future workforce: The House of Representatives passed the A Stronger Workforce for America Act, which would streamline the maze of federal workforce development programs and help more Americans get the training they need to obtain good paying jobs. ECA expects the Senate to take up similar legislation this summer.
- Privacy: Senate and House of Representatives leaders introduced The American Privacy Rights Act of 2024, bipartisan legislation that would establish a federal privacy standard that would supersede the current patchwork of state privacy laws. At this time, it is unclear whether there is enough support for passage in both houses of Congress.
|
What this means: Despite Congressional chaos and gridlock, there is still strong bipartisan support for many aspects of ECA's 2024 public policy agenda!

3. Have you registered for #ECALAD? |
- By the numbers: With 7 weeks to go before #ECALAD 2024, registration has already exceeded last year's numbers!
|
What to expect: On Legislative Action Day, industry leaders and advocates will meet with their lawmakers on Capitol Hill to advocate for 2 key industry priorities:
|
- Eliminating visa backlogs and modernizing the visa processing system. π
- Helping attract and retain the industry's next generation workforce. π·
